Bangalore is the state capital of Karnataka.
Karnataka is among the top 5 Industrialized State where one
global corporation moves in each week. Bangalore is a major
center of technology development. About 80,000 people work in
its high-tech industries.
Many are graduates of Bangalore's more than 100 engineering
schools, which is half the number found in the entire USA.
All these schools are in private sector and only one is run
by the state government. Karnataka was the first state in India
to liberalize education in the private sector three decades
ago.
The Board of Information Technology Education Standards
(BITES) that promotes higher education in the state and
publishes quality rating of these institutes. In fact one of
the reasons why the Information Technology revolution started
in Bangalore was the availability of the engineer-ing workforce
in the state.
India’s stock of graduates runs into several millions. At
least 30% of them are housewives who have traditionally not
been in the work force. With rising cost of living, more women
prefer working if given the opportunity. In addition, over 2.5
million graduates are available for recruitment every year
Bangalore with a population of over six million stands as
the third most populous city in India and the 27th largest city
in the world. With an enormous growth rate of 38%, in 200,
Bangalore was the fastest-growing Indian metropolis after New
Delhi.
Bangalore's economy worth USD 60.5 billion makes it a major
economic centre in India. And thus Bangalore is India's fourth
largest and fastest growing market.
The city is also the third-largest hub for high net worth
individuals (HNWI / HNIs), after Mumbai and Delhi. Bangalore's
share of Rs. 1660 crore (US$ 3.7 billion) in Foreign Direct
Investment was the third highest for an Indian city.
Bangalore is headquarters to several public manufacturing
heavy industries and it is called the "Silicon Valley of India"
because of the large number of Information Technology companies
located in the city which contribute 38% of India's Rs. 100,000
crore (US$ 22 billion) IT and software export market.
