About Kinshasa, Congo
Kinshasa is a
bustling city in the Republic of Congo. With a population of
more than 7 million in 2004. The city of Brazzaville (about 1.5
million inhabitants in 2007 with its suburbs) is the country's
capital. It lies just across the Congo River from
Kinshasa.
Together Brazzaville and
Kinshasa has nearly 9 million inhabitants. The Republic of
Congo has the second largest French-speaking population in the
world.
The Republic of Congo is on
the path to economic growth and development. This is one of the
fastest growing regions in Africa with 52 million inhabitants.
This means that the Republic of Congo has the third largest
population and the second largest land area in the Sub-Saharan
Africa.
Rich in human resources, it is
home to over 200 African ethnic groups, of which the majority
are Bantu, Mongo, Luba, Kwese, Kongo, Tshokwe, Buda, Pende) and
Mangbetu-Azande (Hamitic).
The country's wealth of
natural resources include the second largest rain forest in the
world, fertile soils and varied minerals. The Congo is a major
producer of cadmium, cobalt, coltan, copper, gold, industrial
diamonds, manganese, petroleum, silver, tin, zinc and tantalum.
Tantalum is used in the fabrication of electronic components in
computers and mobile phones.
Central Congo until recently
was one of the world's leading producers of industrial
diamonds, and gold deposits have been found in the western and
northeastern Congo. Mining has long been the Congo's main
foreign exchange earner and the key to its economic vitality.
The country is also the third largest oil producer in southern
africa
