Lisbon is the
economic center of Portugal, producing 45% of the country's
gross domestic product and hosting Portugal's Head of State and
government seat.
Lisbon's
economy is based chiefly on the service industry. Headquarters
of most multinational companies operating in Portugal can
be found in Lisbon.
It is a developing technological and financial center and
one of the most sophisticated and largest regional markets in
the Iberian Peninsula. Shoes, clothing, earthenware, china and
textiles are among its leading industries.
It has the most developed and largest mass media sector of
Portugal and it houses media companies such as radio stations,
television networks and major newspapers.
Portugal's chief
seaport, The Port of Lisbon is the busiest
port on the European Atlantic coast. It has three terminals for
cruise ships: the Alcântara, Rocha de Conde d'Óbidos and the
Santa Apolónia terminals.
The Euronext
Lisbon is also headquartered in Lisbon. It belongs to the NYSE
Euronext group, the first global stock exchange. The Euronext
Lisbon trades equities, public and private bonds, participation
bonds, warrants, corporate warrants, investment trust units,
and exchange traded funds.
Lisbon regularly hosts
political summits including NATO and the European Union
summits.
